During a bodywork session for a cancer patient, modifications are made to existing massage therapy techniques in order to work safely with complications of cancer and cancer treatment.

Extra pillows and blankets are used when needed to create more comfort for the client on the table.  In addition, during the massage, pressure is lighter and pace is slower.  Longer massage strokes are balanced with well-timed therapeutic holds.

To start a session, the therapist and client might practice special breathing exercises together.  Different patterns of breathing assist in managing pain and emotions.
